The keys felt heavy in her hand. Emily stared at the lock, its tarnished brass glinting in the weak sunlight. She had a key! A tangible link to this place, this house, where she’d laughed, cried, and grown into the person she was.

She remembered the squeak of the front door, the scent of beeswax polish and furniture. She could almost see her dad sitting in his armchair, reading the newspaper, the soft ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.
