Gemotions

The demolition workers were already starting, the sound of machinery a brutal symphony. Laura watched, her face pale. She remembered the warmth of the sun on her back as she sat in the garden. She remembered the taste of the apple pies her grandmother used to make, the comforting aroma filling the house.

She closed her eyes, trying to block out the noise. She remembered the feeling of being safe, of being loved. The house, now a construction site, was a physical manifestation of all of that.

Her hands were shaking. She felt the urge to run, to scream. She took a deep breath, fighting the tears that threatened to spill over. Her memories, she realized, were all she had left.
