Gemotions

The aroma of freshly cut grass drifted through the open window, a scent that always transported him. He remembered the summers he spent at his grandmother's, the endless fields he roamed with a scruffy terrier mix, much like the one currently digging under his rose bushes. His hand instinctively reached for the worn leather of the baseball glove he kept on the shelf, the scent of the glove and the dog’s persistent digging somehow intertwined. “Not again, Buster,” he sighed, remembering the days he would spend watching his grandfather tend the garden.

He slowly rose, his knees creaking in protest, and crossed the living room. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the floor, just like in his childhood memories. He grabbed the shovel from the garage, the familiar weight a comfort. The dog, a golden retriever this time, paused its excavation, tail wagging furiously as if expecting a game of fetch. He smiled, a genuine, bittersweet expression.
