The flickering neon sign of the corner store cast long shadows across the apartment’s living room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah sat on the floor, sorting through a box of old photographs, a small, involuntary smile playing on her lips. Her roommate, Mark, was pacing the room, his voice a mix of pleading and excitement. "Think of the fun, Sarah! A cat! A furry friend!"

She picked up a faded picture of her family's old farmhouse, her grandmother's garden bursting with color, and a sleek black cat perched on the porch railing. She remembered the gentle warmth radiating from that cat, its calm presence during stressful times.

The feeling of that bygone time seemed fragile, delicate. The apartment, with its sterile white walls and minimalist furniture, felt cold by comparison.
