The radio crackled, then the first chords of his most successful song filled the car. Daniel gripped the steering wheel a little tighter, the leather warm beneath his palms. He hadn't heard it in ages. He felt a phantom weight on his chest, the phantom burden of being young and ambitious and slightly terrified. The singer’s voice, a smooth and soulless tenor, grated on him. It lacked the raw, yearning energy he’d poured into it. He remembered the cramped studio, the late nights, the thrill of creating something from nothing. He sighed, the breath catching in his throat.
