He leaned back in his chair, the letter clutched in his hand. It was a letter he'd written to his dog, Max, years ago, but never delivered. The dog had passed a long time ago. He’d found the letter in a box of old pictures.

He pictured the dog's tail wagging. The letter was filled with simple joys. He recalled the warmth of a furry body pressed against his leg, the comfort of knowing that someone was happy to see you. His chest tightened.
