The heavy leather-bound journal felt familiar in her hands, the pages yellowed with time. She sat in the dim light of the library, the scent of old paper and dust triggering pleasant recollections. Inside, her meticulously kept record of birds spotted, their behaviors, and their songs. It was a secret world, now, a world of birds, which she'd shared with her son, Daniel.

She remembered the crisp mornings spent with Daniel, binoculars in hand, their shared excitement as they identified a rare species. He'd followed her closely as she wrote. Daniel's enthusiasm, his thirst for knowledge, had been infectious. He was now out, recording his own observations.

She flipped the page, her finger tracing a delicate watercolor sketch of a robin. It had all begun, she thought, in this place. A place he now owned.
