The scent of lavender, from the sachets tucked away in a drawer, filled Emily's small bedroom. She ran her fingers across the worn cover of a childhood diary, its pages filled with the secrets and dreams of her youth. The discovery of a half-brother, revealed in a surprising letter, had brought a strange feeling.

She remembered her parents, their love. She thought of her childhood home, the warmth of the kitchen, the scent of her mother's cooking. The feeling was difficult to describe.

She closed her eyes, imagining herself back in the garden, with the warmth of the sun on her skin, when everything seemed simpler. She opened them again, and stared at the letter.
