The hum of the espresso machine filled the small cafe, a familiar sound that usually comforted Ethan. Today, however, it only seemed to amplify the internal noise in his head. He was scrolling through his email when the message showed up. A recommendation for a therapist. He recognised the name.

It was Gary Thornton. He had no clue Gary had a doctorate and was trying to help people. The memory of Gary’s sneering face swam before his eyes. A profound sadness settled in his chest. He took a sip of the bitter coffee, a sensation of something sweet and sour washing over him.

He wondered if Gary still remembered the time he stole his bike.
