The weight of the unopened envelope pressed on her hand. Inside the safe deposit box, amongst some jewelry and letters, was a bank statement. He had always been so secretive. Amy, standing in the bright sunlight, knew that she would be forever changed.

The amount stunned her. The balance was significant. Images of their shared life flooded her mind: their first house, their children, the years of shared laughter.

She felt something stir within her. He had been a man of few words, and she had always thought she knew him. Perhaps she never did. She clutched the statement, wanting to go back, to change things, but knowing that was impossible. The past, like the present, was unchangeable.
