Michael slammed his laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the sterile silence of his dorm room. He felt a pang of something he couldn't quite name, a deep ache in his chest, as the failed quiz stared back at him. He wandered over to his window, the city lights blurring through the rain-streaked glass. He remembered, vividly, holding his dad's hand as a child and staring out at the same city lights. Back then, they felt like a universe of possibility; now, they felt more like a distant dream. The dull ache in his chest grew, and he wished he could feel that simple sense of wonder once more.
