The phone call from the new homeowner’s lawyer was polite, insistent. The cherry tree, on the property line, posed a threat. He was informed of the risks, the potential damage, the clear need for its removal.

He drove to the edge of the property, the late afternoon light painting the leaves in shades of gold and crimson. He felt an echo of joy, remembering cherry pie baking in the kitchen.

He could almost feel his mother's hand on his shoulder, the comforting weight of it. The smell of cinnamon wafted in the breeze. He had to keep a straight face as he listened, but he was overcome with emotion.

He closed his eyes. “Yes, of course," he finally said, his voice thick with unbidden feeling.
