The daisies, simple and cheerful, sat on the workbench, surrounded by tools and spare parts. He looked at them with a frown. Flowers weren't his world. He preferred the clean lines of engineering.

He picked up a wrench, turning it over in his hand. The weight felt familiar, comforting. He thought of long-ago weekends working on cars with his grandfather. The laughter, the grease, the shared satisfaction. A sudden ache resonated inside him. He put down the wrench and stared at the daisies again.
