The notice, a stark white rectangle clipped to the peeling paint of his apartment door, felt like a slap. He traced the words, "Condominium Conversion," with a trembling finger, the rough texture of the paper scratching at his skin. He hadn't expected this.

He walked inside, the worn wooden floorboards groaning under his weight, each creak a familiar sigh. The scent of old books and brewing coffee, a constant presence for years, seemed somehow sharper, more poignant, in the sudden quiet. He glanced around at the dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun, a silent ballet he'd watched countless times.

Later, he found himself pulling down a box from the top of his closet, a box he hadn't opened in years. Inside, tucked away amidst yellowed letters and faded photographs, lay a pressed flower from his first date, a movie ticket stub from a film they’d both forgotten, and a worn-out, stuffed bear.
