It was an impersonal email, a bland announcement that his apartment building was transitioning into a condo. He scrolled through the message, the words swimming before his eyes, feeling the shock.

He turned on the faucet, listening to the water rushing. The sound. He turned to the counter, and stared at the cracks that had appeared over the years. This apartment. He knew it, front to back.

Later, he retrieved a box from under his bed. Inside, he found a collection of old letters, tied together with a faded ribbon. He remembered writing those letters, and how he would look at the apartment, hoping to one day escape. Now, the apartment itself was escaping.
