"Okay, so this is how we handle customer complaints," Lisa said, gesturing towards the phone on her desk. Sarah, her replacement, scribbled furiously in a notebook. Lisa felt a tremor of something unpleasant in her stomach.

The phone rang. Lisa ignored it, pretending to be engrossed in the stack of invoices in front of her. She’d always answered all calls herself. It was her domain. The phone rang again, and again.

Finally, Sarah looked up, a questioning expression on her face. "Aren't you going to answer it?"

"Oh, you can handle that," Lisa said, her voice tight. "It's all in the handbook." She stared at the ceiling as Sarah hesitantly reached for the phone.
