"You need to cooperate," the dean said, her voice smooth and unyielding. Alex, however, sat in stony silence. The air in the dean's office felt thick, heavy with unspoken accusations. He had nothing to say.

He ran his tongue along his teeth, feeling the hard edges. He had done nothing wrong, and he would not give them the satisfaction of an apology, or even an explanation. His hands were clasped in his lap, almost pressing the flesh.

He stared out the window at the vibrant campus, at the carefree students strolling in the sunshine. He felt utterly disconnected, a prisoner of their accusations. He would not yield.
