The email arrived, a digital slap in the face. "We regret to inform you..." The words blurred, but the message was clear. They had chosen Emily. Anger surged, a hot wave that threatened to consume him. This was not fair. He deserved the promotion.

He immediately reached for his phone, a primal urge to call Emily. To berate her. To accuse her of some underhanded trickery. He paced the small apartment, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists. The walls seemed to close in, the air growing heavy. He didn't call. Instead, he slammed his phone down, the sound echoing in the sudden silence.

He knew he would have to call her eventually. But not today.
