The cater waiters began to pass out the canapés, and Claire abruptly turned her back, feigning interest in the view from the window. She saw his reflection in the glass, and she didn't flinch. She was not going to be the one to react.

She deliberately chose to engage in a lengthy conversation with the bride's distant aunt, a woman she barely knew. She was all smiles and attentiveness, her voice overly sweet, as she asked about the aunt's cats.

She wouldn't give him the time of day. She would not acknowledge his presence. She would out-polite him, out-charm him, and out-last him.
