She found herself meticulously organizing the spice rack, a task she'd put off for months. Each jar was examined, labeled, and placed in perfect alphabetical order. The kitchen, usually a space of chaotic creativity, was now a sterile laboratory of order. The phone, nestled on the counter, seemed to thrum with a hidden energy.

A sudden, sharp pain lanced through her hand. She’d accidentally nicked her finger while cleaning. She wrapped it in a paper towel, but the sting wouldn’t go away. The sight of blood made her dizzy.

He had claimed to be working late. She would not call him. She would not. If he really was just working, then his excuses would hold water. If he was lying, then he would need to come to her.
