"Mr. Thompson, it's lovely to see you," the headmaster boomed. He, in turn, offered a curt nod. The headmaster had a way of speaking that always made him feel like a child again. He felt a sharp sting. It made him want to say something rude.

His son, Leo, was going to be in Ms. Finch's class. He didn't want to hear about it. Ms. Finch had been *his* fifth-grade teacher. The same woman, the same classroom. He’d walked out of the school, almost stomping.

The next day, he found himself parked down the street from the school, observing the children as they arrived. He didn't know why he was doing it. He sat in his car for what seemed like hours.

The next day, as he drove Leo to school, he told him he was the best son ever and that he loved him.
