The email notification blared into Maya's consciousness. "Your Teenage Diary: Now Online!" The subject line felt like a personal insult. She had always been a private person. That diary was her haven. Her secret. Now it was everyone's. She folded her arms. Her back stiffened.

She went to the website. The layout was garish, the colours assaulting. The font was bubbly and childish. It was almost too much. The sheer audacity of it. The lack of respect. She wouldn't even acknowledge them.

She grabbed a trash bag, marched out to her car, and drove to the library, where she knew there were a number of books on local history. She started researching, and immersed herself in the lives of people she had never met, finding solace in the stories.
