The heat in the office was stifling, or maybe it was just me. Sweat beaded on my forehead as I watched Daniel, fresh out of business school, saunter towards the breakroom. He had that smug look, the one that said he was better than everyone else. He was probably planning a trip to a fancy restaurant. And he made more money than me. I clenched my fists.

I knew the ins and outs of this company. I had put in the time. I'd stayed late, volunteered for extra shifts. He was just a cog in the machine. He hadn't earned it. The email chain had been quite clear. His salary was superior. So I slammed the keyboard on my desk shut. I didn't care about the meeting. I was done for the day.
