I felt a flush creep up my neck. I'd seen the numbers. I knew the truth. David, with his fancy degree and even fancier shoes, was making more than I. I, who knew the system inside and out, who could troubleshoot any problem, who had dedicated my life to this company. He would need help today. He would have questions. He always did.

I spun my chair around, facing away from my desk. The sun was brilliant, mocking me with its light. The unfinished emails could wait. The deadlines could wait. I took a deep breath. I would let him ask. I wouldn't go to him. He could come to me. I would reply, yes, but only when I was good and ready.
