The estate agent had talked about the "charming quirks" of the property. Those "quirks" irritated him. The crooked floors, the drafty windows, the mismatched tiles – all of it grated on his nerves. He wanted order, control.

He started with the kitchen, pulling down the lower cabinets, searching behind them. The house was going to yield to his efforts.
