It was addressed to "Katherine," a name she hadn't used in years. Now she was Kate. The envelope lay unopened on her desk. She stared at it, the paper seeming to absorb all the light in the room.

She considered the logistics: the travel, the clothes, the hair salon. The expense, both financial and emotional. It all felt like an unnecessary burden.

She pulled out her phone and started scrolling, looking for a distraction. Anything to avoid opening the damn thing. The world was full of demands, and it seemed to never stop. She had her own life. They did not factor in it.
