The old quilt, stitched by his grandmother, was folded neatly on the sofa. His wife wanted to donate it to the local historical society. It was old, worn, and needed mending, she argued. A practical assessment. He felt a deep, instinctive resistance.

"It’s just… sentimental, honey," she said, her voice soft but firm. He turned away, his stomach twisting. He hated it when she was reasonable.

He walked to the window and stared out at the rain. He remembered his grandmother, her hands moving swiftly, the needle a tiny dance of love. The quilt was more than fabric; it was a physical embodiment of her love.

"We are not giving it away," he said, the words a firm command. It was a line he wasn’t willing to cross.
