The antique doll, its porcelain face serene, sat on the top shelf of the bookcase. Her mother wanted to donate it to a charity auction. Her entire body tensed at the suggestion.

"It would go to a good cause," her mother said, her voice gentle, coaxing. Her daughter refused.

She felt the familiar pull, the stubborn refusal to budge. The doll, with its delicate features and intricate dress, was the only thing left of her deceased sister. It was a part of her, her essence.

“It’s not happening,” she said, her voice sharp. She wouldn't explain, wouldn't justify her feelings. The matter was closed.
