The librarian gave her a condescending look. “The mechanism you’re describing, ma’am, is remarkably similar to the one patented by Mr. Abernathy in 1923.” Clara's breath hitched. She tightened her grip on the worn book. Her grandfather had been convinced this idea was original. The librarian, oblivious, continued: “There are some small differences, but the core design…”. Clara slammed the book shut. “Differences are what matter!” she snapped. The librarian recoiled. Clara turned and strode out, her shoulders rigid. The old man may have had the first iteration, but she knew she could make it better.
