The old carousel, once a source of endless joy, now felt like a taunt. David watched Ethan stroll past, engrossed in a phone call. He'd found him! After all these years and a chance encounter. And Ethan didn't even *know* him.

David felt a burning sensation in his chest. He hadn't expected a red-carpet welcome, but complete and utter blankness? He'd bought the tickets, arranged the picnic, even packed Ethan’s favourite sandwiches. He'd even had that awkward, forced haircut.

He caught up with Ethan, blocking his path. “Ethan, wait.” He reached out, grabbing his arm.

Ethan flinched. “Do I… know you?” he asked, his voice sharp. David's jaw clenched.

“We built forts, remember? We even tried to make a raft!” He ignored the sharp edge in Ethan’s voice and kept going. Ethan stared at him, his face a perfect mask of disinterest. David, his face burning, finally let go of his arm. He clenched his fists, the image of their shared history mocking him. He wouldn't show weakness. He wouldn't look away.
