Sarah tapped her foot, the rapid rhythm a frantic counterpoint to the polite congratulations being offered to Mark. His achievement felt like a personal affront. She clenched her jaw, the muscles tightening until her temples throbbed.

"Fantastic news, Mark," the boss said, clasping Mark's shoulder with a hearty slap. Sarah fought the urge to recoil, to pull away from the forced camaraderie. It was unjust, a slap in the face. She'd put in the hours, the effort. Mark had charm, and that was all.
