The congratulatory card sat on his desk, untouched. "Congratulations, David! Best of luck!" It was signed by everyone in the office, except him. He’d been busy.

He crumpled the card into a ball, then smoothed it out, a small act of defiance. He’d never admit it, but a small part of him had hoped, maybe even expected, the promotion.

He sat back in his chair, and stared at the ceiling. The office seemed to hum with the energy of the new management structure. His jaw tightened. He went back to his work, his face a mask.
