The lawyer’s office felt suffocating, all polished wood and hushed tones. David, however, felt a different kind of pressure. He'd found the letter in his mother’s effects, a letter of resignation from a job she never mentioned. A job she'd kept quiet about.

He’d stormed out of the house, refusing to help sort through boxes. He had no obligation to be here. He'd never liked his mother's friends anyway. But the letter… it was a challenge, a tiny scratch on the surface of his carefully constructed reality.

He leaned forward, his knuckles white, and asked the lawyer, “What did she *really* do?” His voice was low, laced with a simmering tension he couldn't quite control. His mother was supposed to be easy. He hated that she wasn't.
