The phone rang incessantly. Finally, she picked it up, expecting it to be *him*. "The tree?" she snapped into the receiver. It was the insurance company. "Yes, I saw the tree," she said, her voice tight. They explained the process, the paperwork, the claims. "I'm sure it's a mess," the voice on the other end said, all saccharine concern. She slammed the phone down. Then she sat down on the couch, folding her arms across her chest and stared at the ceiling. She’d always wanted to get that new sofa.
