The discovery was made during a city clean up. The city workers delivered the time capsule to Evelyn’s apartment. “We thought you’d like to see it,” they said, with a suggestive smile. Evelyn hated being put on the spot.

She sat on her sofa, the metal box gleaming in the artificial light. She opened the lid slowly, feeling a profound lack of interest. A collection of old magazines, a half-eaten bag of chips, and a cheap plastic toy.

She thought about getting rid of it right away. No. She'd put it on the kitchen counter. Then, maybe, tomorrow. Perhaps she’d look through it. Or maybe not.
