The elevator door chimed open, revealing a freshly painted interior and a saccharine promotional poster. David gripped the handrail, his knuckles white. The image of some smiling family in front of the building made him want to retch.

He let out a loud sigh, shaking his head. He had paid his rent on time, every month, for a decade. He was the one who kept the building alive with his rent payments, who would have done anything to help the super. Now, he was disposable.

He decided that he would keep using the elevator, even if it meant bumping into the real estate agents. He would ride up and down, making them explain the market trends to him. He would ask questions until they were begging him to stop.
