“Grandma,” little Finn called, waving a drawing excitedly. Maya, Finn's grandmother, stopped what she was doing. The drawing contained the figure of a small creature with a purple top hat, and a tiny monocle. She had drawn this character when she was Finn's age!

The boy rambled on about Barnaby, the creature in the picture. Maya found herself gripping the edge of the kitchen counter. Her hands felt clammy.

Later, Maya found herself rearranging furniture, a restless energy driving her. She couldn’t shake the feeling of something being…wrong. She went outside, and took a long walk, trying to blow off some steam. She felt as though something had been taken from her.
