He stared at the email on his phone, the words "regret to inform you" blurring slightly. A wave of heat washed over him, making him feel suddenly too warm, too constricted in his small dorm room. They didn't even *try* to understand, he thought bitterly. He'd poured his heart and soul into that application, detailing his volunteer work, his academic achievements, his financial needs.

He paced the room, his fists clenching and unclenching. How could they possibly justify this decision? He pictured the committee, sitting comfortably in their offices, making judgments about his future with such casual indifference. He wanted to scream, to shatter something. The injustice of it all was almost unbearable.
