“You know, it’s not too late to try a different career path, Mark.” His father’s words hung in the air after the dinner. Mark pushed his food around his plate. They were talking about his chosen profession again.

He’d imagined this would be different. He thought they would be supportive, that they would finally acknowledge his accomplishments. Instead, he felt a weight of judgment, a persistent whisper of doubt.

“I’m happy with what I’m doing, Dad,” he said, his voice flat. He looked at his father, saw the gentle concern etched into his face, but he just felt cornered. He could barely swallow as he continued to eat.
