The email read, “Training – Your Replacement.” A cold feeling settled in John’s gut. After fifteen years, he was expected to assist in his own dismissal. The injustice of it all felt like a physical blow.

He pointed out the procedures, never offering more than the absolute bare minimum. His shoulders remained hunched, his voice devoid of all emotion. He moved as if in slow motion, each task feeling laborious.

The new employee, a young man named Alex, attempted to make polite conversation, but John remained unresponsive. He stared at his monitor, avoiding eye contact, until his shift ended. He grabbed his things, barely muttering goodbye.
