The workshop, usually a symphony of hammering and sawing, was silent. Sarah stood amid the scattered tools, the unfinished sculpture of a soaring bird mocking her. Master Jian had promised her help, guidance. They were almost finished.

He was gone. A note taped to the door, signed with only a flourish of brushstrokes – "My journey continues." No explanation, no offer of help. She had spent countless hours with him, sharing her dreams, her frustrations.

She let her arms fall to her sides, her fingers clenching. She felt a knot tighten in her chest. She had even offered to help him with his move. He knew she depended on him for finishing the piece. How could he just vanish? She picked up a chisel and, with a vicious sweep, hacked at the bird's wing.
