"So, the merger..." Ben started, picking at a loose thread on the tablecloth. He’d always enjoyed listening to David's stories about his high-powered law firm. This evening, however, the tales seemed to have lost their luster. The way David was now talking, it felt like a performance. Ben had run into one of David's supposed "colleagues" at the supermarket and learned the truth about his paralegal role. He found himself avoiding David's gaze, a strange heat spreading across his cheeks. The air in the restaurant felt suddenly heavy.
