“Honey, can you come help me with this?” He’d called from the garage. She could hear the indistinct rumble of the engine. She found him leaning against the car, talking on the phone, his back to her.

She stood there, frozen. She'd been looking forward to a quiet afternoon. Now, a coldness spread through her. The world seemed to shrink around her.

He hung up quickly, his face suddenly closed off. "Oh, hey," he said, too brightly. She felt a sharp, unexpected sting behind her eyes, the familiar precursor to a torrent of tears. She turned and walked back inside, the garage suddenly feeling vast and empty.
