The air crackled with a tension that hadn't been there before. He’d been distant all week, but she’d tried to give him space, assuming it was work stress. Then came the phone calls, late at night, in the spare bedroom.

She pretended to sleep, her body stiff with suppressed emotion. The faint glow from under the door cast long shadows on the wall. She heard whispers, giggles. The sound grated on her ears.

When morning came, she avoided his gaze. She focused on making breakfast, her movements sharp, precise. The silence between them grew, a chasm threatening to swallow them whole.
