“No way,” I muttered, my voice tight. I stared at the carefully crafted invitation, now a source of burning annoyance. My closest friend, my brother in everything… had canceled. Apparently, “circumstances arose.” I felt a strange pressure building behind my eyes, and my hands instinctively clenched into fists.

The celebratory playlist, now mocking and loud, blasted from the laptop. I slammed it shut, the abrupt silence almost as unsettling as the cacophony. I wanted to scream, to lash out, to do *something*. Instead, I just sat there, alone in the mess.
