The aroma of freshly baked cake, now sickening, filled the air. Clara had spent the entire day preparing, her excitement bubbling over. The news, delivered with a casual shrug, hit her like a physical blow. Her shoulders slumped; she felt a heavy, crushing weight settle upon her.

She stared at the perfectly frosted confection, the candles unlit, the message "Happy Birthday" now cruelly ironic. She took a deep breath, fighting back the rising tide of emotions, and methodically began to scrape the frosting off the cake, a bleak and pointless ritual.
