The vibrant colors of the art gallery seemed to mock her. She felt a sharp, unexpected pang in her chest as the other woman, whose name was apparently Sarah, described the intimate art show “he” had arranged for her. Eleanor, had thought the same show was meant for her.

The heat rushed into Eleanor’s cheeks, and her hands clenched. She felt a wave of nausea, like something unpleasant had just turned in her stomach. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words would come.

The world seemed to blur, the art on the walls fading into meaningless smudges of color.
