"Honestly, Liam, you can't be serious," Maya huffed, her voice tight. She gestured around the kitchen, her arm sweeping across the faded floral wallpaper and the cracked linoleum floor. The will had been read hours ago. She had expected to be given, or at the very least offered, the antique pie crust cutter that she'd admired since childhood.

Liam shrugged, a dismissive gesture that set her teeth on edge. He was always so indifferent. "What? The house is the important thing. The pie crust cutter is, what, five dollars?" He’d always been a philistine, devoid of a drop of sensitivity.

Maya’s hands balled into fists. She turned away from him, the room suddenly feeling oppressively small. She focused on the chipped paint on the windowsill, desperately trying to keep herself composed. She didn't want to show her brother her true feelings.
