The invitation was a glossy, colorful affront. “Oakwood High School – Class of ’14: Ten Year Reunion.” Jessica felt her pulse quicken as she read it.

She ran her hand through her hair, a nervous gesture. She’d worked so hard to escape those small-town confines, to build a life where she felt valued. The thought of being forced to confront the ghosts of her past was sickening.

She imagined the conversations, the inevitable comparisons. She tossed the invitation onto her desk, where it lay, a tiny, colorful bomb. She wouldn’t attend. That much was certain.
