He hadn't been back in years. But the news, a casual remark at a coffee shop, had jolted him into a state of shock. The house, his childhood home, was being torn down. John felt a strange, suffocating pressure in his chest. A place that defined him was about to be obliterated.

He walked the streets, the familiar landscape now foreign, and the feeling of resentment bubbled in his stomach. He was being robbed of something precious, a part of himself. The thought of strangers occupying the space where he had grown up filled him with a bitter, burning rage.

He pictured the swing set in the backyard, the tree he used to climb, the window in his bedroom where he watched the stars. He clenched his fists, struggling to contain the overwhelming flood of unwelcome emotions. It felt so deeply wrong.
